We’re delighted to see CALMFLOOR featured in Business Focus Magazine, exploring our journey, our technology and how we are changing the way the built environment tackles problematic floor vibration.

Floor vibration can be easy to overlook, until it begins to affect occupant comfort, productivity, the operation of sensitive equipment, or even the viability of a space for its intended use.

CALMFLOOR offers a fundamentally different way to address the problem. Our active mass damping (AMD) technology is the world’s only active vibration control solution specifically developed for floors, providing an alternative to traditional remedies such as adding steel, concrete, columns or tuned mass dampers.

A different approach to floor vibration

In the Business Focus article, CALMFLOOR CEO Paul Reynolds explains the technology using a familiar analogy:

“It works like noise-cancelling headphones, conceptually,” says Paul Reynolds, CEO of Engineered Vibration Solutions, which trades under the brand CALMFLOOR. “Noise-cancelling headphones sense sounds in the surrounding area and emit the opposite sound signal into your ears, cancelling them out. In the same way, our technology constantly senses floor vibrations and then generates a force that drives the floor in the opposite direction.”

But the technology is only part of the story. At its heart, CALMFLOOR is about solving real problems for building owners, developers, designers and occupiers.

“We effectively resolve client problems with building and floor vibrations using an active control approach to vibration mitigation,” Reynolds explains. “Typically, our clients have one of three key challenges. Either somebody is complaining about vibrations, and they need it solved immediately, or they are upgrading a building, such as turning an office into a lab, or they are constructing a new building and want to use this technology to reduce embodied carbon and the need for excessive material reinforcements.”

These three challenges, remediating existing vibration problems, enabling buildings to be upgraded or repurposed, and designing more material-efficient new structures, are increasingly important as the property industry looks to make better use of existing buildings while reducing the embodied carbon associated with new construction.

By actively controlling vibration rather than relying solely on additional structural mass and stiffness, CALMFLOOR gives engineers and building owners another tool to achieve the performance they need.

We’d like to thank Business Focus Magazine for taking the time to tell our story.
